Two Silver Filigree Caskets from Unidentified Country of Manufacture.

(Post under construction)

Two Mystery Silver Filigree Caskets.

Given that both these caskets were offered in Portugal it is quite possible that they are Portuguese -
The jury is still out!

The PAB Casket.

Previously with deceased Portuguese dealer Pedro Aguiar Branco of Lisbon.

10 x 18 x 12 cms.

Described in the PAB catalogue as Indo Portuguese, Goa.

Given that there is absolutely no evidence of filigree manufacture in Goa the country of its origin remains mysterious.

This image very kindly provided by Hugo Miguel Crespo of the University of Lisbon.

Unfortunately no images are currently available of the hinges.

I have previously written at some length about this form of casket and its variants - this particular casket is unusual. The half pyramid finials do not resemble any of the similar caskets illustrated in my post.

...........................

Just to complicate issues - the style of the central boss on the front panels and on the corners of the lid panel appear frequently in Ottoman silver filigree.

Is this an early, slightly less sophisticated European example? Perhaps manufactured in Portugal or is a slightly debased example made in the Otttoman Empire or possibly South East Asia?

See my post on Ottoman Silver Filigree objects.

The Sao Roque Galley Silver Filigree Casket.

17.02 x 9.91 x 9.91 cms.

Another casket that perhaps employs similar techniques to the casket above.
