Silver filigree Casket - Museum von Hessen Kassel and related Caskets

A 17th/ 18th Century Silver and Silver Gilt Filigree Casket -

and Several Related Caskets with Solomonic Columns.

It would be very useful to see photographs of the detail of the hinges on the backs of these caskets in order to make comparisons.

(post in preparation - updated 7 April 2023).

Possibly Scandinavian, perhaps South German.

The Museum suggest Goa!

I am in correspondence with Hugo Miguel Crespo of Lisbon University who reliably informs me that there is absolutely no documentary proof available so far, of any filigree manufacture in Goa.

This casket is in the Museum von Hessen Kassel.

The similarities in technique and detail lead me to believe that all these caskets (except for the enamelled Sotheby's example - and possible the PAB example below) were made in the same or a related North European workshop.

 17th / 18th Century Silver Filigree Casket.

In The David Collection, Copenhagen.

The details of the workmanship particularly the detail at the top of the columns and the bun feet suggest to me that this and the Museum von Hessen Kassel Casket (above) and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Casket (below) were both manufactured in the same workshop.

I suspect that the columns were originally clad in filigree which is now missing.

Probably from the estate of Queen Sophie Magdalene (1700-70).

Perhaps a wedding present from king Christian V (1646-99) to his wife Queen Charlotte Amalie (1650-1714), at their wedding 1667.

___________

17th/ 18th Century Silver Filigree Casket.

This casket is unusual - It shares the same style of ball feet and the central bosses in the two front panel and on the side panels.

The half pyramid terminations at the top of the columns does not appear on any other casket of this sort.

 Size 10 x 18 x 12 cms.

There are no further details available as yet.

A much higher resolution image of the PAB casket.

very kindly provided by Hugo Miguel Crespo of Lisbon University.

Just to complicate issues - the style of the central boss on the front panels and on the corners of the lid panel appear frequently in Ottoman silver filigree.

Sotheby's Lot 218, 24 April 2013.

No size given.

The fine net like filigree on the background here is unlike the technique used on the other caskets illustrated here, and is close to Chinese techniques.

Is this perhaps a copy from China or South East Asia?

The Veritas Auctions Silver Gilt, Silver Filigree and Enamel Casket.

With engaged columns at the corners.

Probably the most overtly Chinese Influenced of this group of caskets with the engaged columns. casket.
