This form of this figure follows that of the Spanish
miraculous image known as the Virgin of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar or
the Virgen del Pilar) housed in the Basílica del Pilar, the largest Baroque
church in the country. According to legend, around the year 40 A.D., an image
of the Virgin Mary standing on a column is said to have appeared to the apostle
Saint James and commanded him to build a church on that site. Throughout the
liturgical year, the figure is dressed in various ornate garments, and devotees
leave gifts of flowers for Her on Her feast day, the 12th October.
