Some 17th and 18th Century Filigree in Dutch Museums.

Part 2.

Some Filigree Caskets.

Most objects here are in need of conservation, although one could see this as benign neglect.

Too many pieces that I see appear to have been dipped in a chemical which removes the patina of age.

As pointed out by

..........................................

1. 17th/ 18th Century Silver Gilt Filigree Casket.

Probably Dutch or German.

This has unusual three dimensional filigree work on the lid.

A photograph of the lid would be useful.

Size - 10 x 13.5 x 8.3cms.

Inventory number : TM-229-66

2. 17th/ 18th Century Silver Filigree Casket with Jewels.

Fantastic object which would certainly benefit from a very gentle polish.

Size approx. 13.5 x 13.5 x 10.2cm.

Hinged lid. Along the upright upper edge of the box and the lower edge of the lid (except at the back) decorated with a row of silver-set gemstones.

Inventory number : TM-229-77.

This should be compared with the example in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. (below)

13 x 13 x 9 cms.

.........................

3. 17th/18th Century Silver Filigree Casket.

Size approx. 5.5 x 11 x 7.8cms.

Hinged overlapping lid, with vase-shaped pilasters on which flower-bud-shaped ornaments are applied. At the front a horizontal protruding pin to lift the lid.

Inventory number : TM-229-78.

.....................................

4. A 17th/ 18th Century Silver Filigree Casket.

Size approx. 6.8 x 20 x 15cms.

Silver octagonal box with hinged lid and key.

appears to have been slightly crushed on the front edge of the lid.

Inventory number : TM-229-69

..................................

5. 17th/ 18th Century, 5 Domed Silver Filigree Casket.

Approx. 9.4 x 14.5 x 9cms.

Four silver calibration marks are stamped on the bottom of the inner box, one with a capital 'R' and one with three crosses as in the Amsterdam coat of arms.

These are probably import marks and might suggest an Indian or South East Asian origin.

Better photographs and more research needed!

Inventory number : TM-229-74.

................................

6. Another 17th/ 18th Century 5 Part Domed Silver Filigree Casket.

Approx. 7 x 8.6 x 5.4cms

 Inventory number : TM-229-75.
