Italian Silver Gilt Chalice with Silver Filigree Mounts and Base.

Suggested as Sicilian.

Height 25 cms.

Since the  17th Century and throughout the 18th century both the silversmiths from Messina and from Palermo were particularly skilled in working with filigree.

This Chalice seems to find stylistic confirmation in the chalice of the Cathedral of Cefalù, made in Messina in 1703 (cf. M. Accascina, Oreficeria di Sicilia dal XII al XIX cento, Palermo 1974, p. 403; M. Accascina , The trademarks of Sicilian silverware and goldsmiths, Palermo 1976).

The coat of arms that appears on the base of the chalice is identical to that of the Roman patrician family of the Mattei. However, there is no known connection between this family and the Marta area which is capable of justifying such a donation.
