Some 17th and 18th Century Filigree in Dutch Museums.

Part 3.

Some Indian Filigree Caskets.

The main images and information from -

This is a difficult site to navigate.

Most objects depicted on the Dutch website and used here are in need of conservation, although one could see this as benign neglect.

I have previously touched on the subject see -

A 17th/18th Century Indian Gold Filigree Lidded Casket.

Dutch Museum.

The use of the small independent comma shaped twisted wire filaments the fish catch on the lid also suggests an Indian origin for this exceptionally fine piece of workmanship.

For Comparison.

London Dealer Michael Backman currently (February 2023) has in stock another similar Indian Silver filigree heart shaped box.

Mr Backman suggests Dutch Colonial but I would suggest more likely to be Cuttack or Karimnagar, India as the source.

Length: 7cm, width: 5.5cm, height: 2.5cm.

Once again I am very grateful to Michael Backman for his support and allowing me to use his images.

The workmanship on this box is so close to that on those above that I consider that they are almost certainly from the same workshop.
