Filigree and Portugal in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Silver and Gold Filigree and Portugal in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

(Post in preparation).

So far the focus of my researches and images for this blog has been on filigree production North of the Alps, but time after time I have come across references to filigree production in South East Asia and India, specifically Cuttack, Karimnager and the Portuguese colony of Goa, but the filigree of Northern Europe has been (with a few exceptions) ignored.

The aim of this blog is to throw some light on to the origin of these fascinating pieces and to clarify their sources.

I am very grateful to Paulo Valente at the House of Filigree Museum in Porto, Portugal, https://www.houseoffiligree.com/ who has provided me with these links below.

There is much food for thought here and I will return to the subject once I have a more secure handle on the subject.

I also hope to open up a dialogue with Hugo Miguel Crespo who has written on the subject at some length and contributed to the Journal in the links below.

Here are some photographs of objects in collections in Portugal.

17th Century Rhinoceros Horn and silver gilt Filigree Cup.

The Horn is Chinese but the form of the silver gilt filigree suggests that it is European.

Photo: Libation cup, Jiangsu, China. Rhino horn mounted on silver filigree (Manila?) 17th century, second half. Private Collection, OnShot/Rui Carvalho. Museu do Oriente.
