South German Silver Filigree Centre Piece in the form of a Well

South German Table Centre Piece.
Height 15 cms.
c. 1730.

Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe.

In the 1892 catalog of the Grand Ducal Art Chamber in Karlsruhe, the draw well was included with an apology to the reader if it "should be considered by severe critics as hardly worthy of appearing among the artistic objects".

As early as 1740, the table fountain was on display as a special curiosity in the Kunstkammer of the Margraves of Baden: "A kind of well in filigree, bucket and well made of clay".

A Chinese thin-walled bowl made of extremely fine-grained red stoneware is surrounded by the well architecture.
