Indo Portuguese Silver Filigree Box formerly with Finch and Co.

17th/ 18th Century "Indo Portuguese" Silver Filigree Box

formerly with Finch and Co.

https://www.finch-and-co.co.uk/

It is described as contained in original wooden travelling box.

Size: 8.5cm high, 14cm wide, 9cm deep.

 Provenance: Ex Private Dutch collection.

They say cf: A similar larger silver filigree casket in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

The filigree work appears to have a looser feel than that of European filigree work of the same period.

Did Indian and South East Asian filigree workers copy European objects?

The shape of the key is perhaps a further clue to its South Asian origin.

Depending on the source these objects are described as from Goa, Karimnager or Batavia (modern day Jakarta but without evidence it is dangerous to speculate
