Some 18th/19 Century Indian Silver Filigree objects attributed to Cuttack, Orissa.

An 18th/19 Century Indian Silver Filigree Casket -

Sold Sotheby's, London.

Lot 61, 14 January 2021.

13 cms long.

Provenance - Property of a descendant of William Beckford & The Dukes of Hamilton.

The maker here has cheated here by punching rather than twisting together two wire to produce the individual comma shaped pieces.

The use here of the individual comma shaped pieces of silver appears to be typical of pieces crafted in India and usually described as from Karimnager, but according to an essay published in India on silver filigree from Karimnagar, filigree work was introduced to Karimnagar by a Mr Kadarla Ramayya of Yalagandala in about the 1830.

If this is indeed the case then much filigree work previously described as work from Karinagar is from elsewhere - most likely Cuttack, Orissa (where it is still made today).

There is no evidence that any filigree was made in Goa.

Another Indian Silver Gilt Filigree Casket.

One of a group of Similar Caskets.

I believe 19th Century Cuttack.

Previously with London dealer Michael Backman.

Once more I am indebted to Michael Backman for allowing me to use his photographs.

Length: 18.4cm, width: 12.2cm, height (including handle) 15cm.

Very fine filigree work again using the small individual comma shaped pieces.

Michael Backman suggests c. 1750 from Orissa (Orisha). North East India.

A Silver Filigree Hookah Set.

18th / 19th Century.

Sold by Michael Backman.

He suggests either Orissa (Cuttack or Deccan - Karimnagar).

I think Cuttack is most likely.

A truly remarkable princely piece of the very finest virtuoso Indian workmanship.

I don't usually like to express an opinion but for my money this one of the finest pieces I have come across.

This piece again uses the individual comma shaped pieces of wire but also uses other techniques to achieve the final effect.

Height 65.5 cms.

Again I am indebted to Michael Backman for allowing me to use his excellent photographs.
