17th Century Cornelian and Gold Filigree mounted Bowl at Burghley House.

A 17th Century Gold Filigree and Cornelian Bowl.

Indian Bowl possibly European Filigree.

The Cornelian bowl originated from Cambay on the west coast of India, the gold filigree base is perhaps of European origin, 4.2 cm in diameter.

It appears in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule, the inventory recording an enormous bequest to Anne, wife of the 5th Earl of Exeter from her mother Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire: ‘A Round Cornelian Cup with a Gold philigrin ffoote’.

Cornelian is a type of chalcedony which derives its colour from iron oxide impurities in the mineral and Cambay, where it is still found, has been a centre for the production of such pieces for many hundreds of years.
