17th / 18th Century Silver Filigree Dome Top Casket in the Green Room at Dresden, and other Domed Caskets for comparison.

The 17th. Century Silver Filigree Domed Lidded Casket in the Green Room,  (Grunes Gewolbe) at Dresden.

(Post in preparation).

Updated 19 April 2023.

Illustrated here are several (I believe) related caskets.

They are form of Dutch, particularly Fresian marriage caskets or chests (Knottekistje). The most common type is the silver domed trunk-shaped on four ball supports with domed cover and swing handle.

I will in due course attempt to assemble images of all the caskets of this type that I have so far located.

These blog posts are in the form of a diary and contain my thoughts whilst writing them - sort of stream of consciousness - nothing is set in stone and my thoughts might well change in the future, currently my thinking is that these pieces are Northern European.

There is no comparable dome top casket in the Hermitage, St Petersburg Collection.

.....................................

The 17th/18th Century Grunes Gewolbe, Dresden Silver Filigree Casket.

This casket is first mentioned in the inventory of Lichtenburg castle 1717, when it was in possession of Anna Sophia (the mother of Augutsus the Strong):

“4eckigtes silbernes Kästgen von durchbrochener Arbeit mit einem gewölbten Deckel, worinnen 2 Fächer“.

With the establishment of the Green Vault as a treasury with public access under Augustus the Strong (1723-1729), the casket was transferred to the Preciosa Room of the collection in 1724.

Unfortunately, no sources about the acquisition of the casket are known.

Width 20 cms.

I have just received further photographs of this casket from Dirk Weber Curator at the Green Room.

The side handles of both these pieces have very similar terminals and the round drop handles also appear to be of the same type.

I have just received Wednesday 19 April 2023 the following three photographs and details of the provenance of The Grunes Gewolbe Casket from Dirk Weber - Curator at the Grunes Gewolbe.

I most grateful to Dirk Weber for his correspondence and the following photographs.

Also compare with the silver gilt Khalili Casket.
see my post.

The New York Hispanic Society Casket

17th Century Domed Top Silver Filigree Casket.
whilst the front and side panels lack the thicker silver wire arabesques the top has very similar work to the panels of the Dresden casket

In its original sharkskin case.

Currently on loan to the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Images above from the New York Hispanic Society website.

Casket size - 12.4 cms wide x 8.6cms tall.

It would be useful to see the hinges on this casket.

The silver balls on the bun feet are unusual.

11.5 x 11 x 15.7 cms.
The hinge on hasp is very close to that on the Khalili Casket

PROPERTY FROM THE WELBY FAMILY, ORIGINALLY AT HARLAXTON MANOR AND DENTON MANOR, LINCOLNSHIRE (LOTS 91-97).

With an engraved inscription 'T. D. 19 JUNE 1838. A. E. D.'

10 cm.high;15 cm wide;  8.5 cm. deep.

The Stockholm National Museum Silver Filigree Casket.

Given the bracket feet I think 18th Century later than those with bun feet..

9.5 x 16 x 8.5 cms.

The small comma shaped twisted wire elements within the rectangular wire framework lead me to think that this piece is perhaps Indian, from Cuttack. Orissa.

The Filigree from Karimnagar has to my eye a more regular appearance.

So far I can find no evidence of filigree being made in Karimnagar before the 1820's.

The Khalili Casket for comparison.

.............................

17th/ 18th Century Casket formerly with London dealer Michael Backman.

Note the Khalili type hinge details.

Also the filigree bun feet and the arabesque rectangular wire framing as on the Dresden Casket.

There is another very similar casket in the Hermitage collection St Petersburg 13 x 12 x17 cms.

and another with more sophisticated feet in the Fries Museum (below).

length: 16.6cm, depth: 11.6cm, height: 13cm

I am very grateful to Michael Backman for allowing me to use his photographs.

The Fries Museum Silver Filigree Casket.

Fries Museum Leeuwarden, Netherlands,

Described as a tea chest - maker Hendrik Dew.

I suspect that any mark will be on an inner silver liner, the casket being late 17th early 18th century.

width: 12.0 cm,  height: 13.5 cm, length: 17.5 cms

Fries Museum, Leeuwarden - Collection Province of Fryslân - legacy mr. A. Looxma Ypeij.

Sotheby's Casket related to the casket above.

They say Gujarat?

At first glance this could be the same casket as that above but  the button on the lid is quite different.
Again these two caskets are almost certainly from the same workshop.

Lot 221, 24 April 2013

no size given.

_____________________

The Middelberg, Netherlands, Town Hall Casket.

NB. the form of the hinges which are very close to those on the Khalili Casket/cabinet.

One of two earlier caskets converted into tea caddies by Hendrik Boshart
in the Middelberg Town Hall Collection.

It is not clear but I believe at least one of the three internal tea caddies have marks for silversmith Hendrik Boshart of Middelberg for 1771.

I suspect there are no marks on the filigree.

This needs to be confirmed.

17 cm high, 17 cm wide and 12.5 cm deep.

The hinges are very similar to those on the Khalili Casket (above) suggesting to me that they both came from the same workshop.

I believe that the casket is 17th/18th century and has been (skillfully) adapted by Boshart.

The caddies, the handle on the top and the lock and the lock are all later additions.

The position of the (later) keyhole on the front is also instructive.

NB. Hinges as in the Khalili cabinet (above).

A small Group of Caskets of a distinct type - with double twisted wire filigree panels set back from the main rectangular elements.

The Dullaert Art and Antiques 17th Century Shallow Domed Top Silver Filigree Knottekistje (Wedding Casket).

Included here because of the domed top and several related caskets.

In these caskets the twisted wire infills are set back from the arabesque rectangular framing - unlike those above where the infills are flush with the framing.

10.5 x 8 x 6.5 cm

.............................

The British Museum Silver Filigree Casket.

I believe closely related to the Dullaerts casket above.

15.2 x 7.7 cms.

Previously with Messrs Spink & Sons Ltd described by them as circa 1665.

Hall Grundy Collection. 1974

Fries Museum Silver Filigree Casket.

The Museum website say Tea Drum maker Jan Buysen, Amsterdam.

I think late 17th / early 18th Century.

I suspect that it has an inner silver liner with the mark of Jan Buysen.
Jan Buysen 1747 - 1813 - working in Amsterdam from 1777.

Width: 10.9 cm , height: 13.5 cm , length: 16.8 cms.

Unfortunately very low resolution image from the Fries Museum website.
